OBJECTIVE(s):

            The student will be able to:

use their knowledge of the food guide pyramid to plan a menu that reflects appropriate servings from each food group.

classify their foods according to the food guide pyramid.

MATERIALS:

Copies of sample menus

Paper

Pencils

Food guide pyramid

Eat Smart PowerPoint

A computer for each group

 

ANTICIPATORY SET:

Show the Eat Smart PowerPoint and have a discussion about restaurants that are healthful and unhealthful.

 

PROCEDURE:

1.         Students will work in groups of 2-3.  They will design a menu for a restaurant that only serves healthful meals.

2.         Show some menus from restaurants around town and some examples from last year’s class.

3.         Students will work together to make a plan for the information they will put on their menu.

4.         The groups will then enter their information into a template created in Microsoft Publisher.

 

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE OR HOMEWORK:

Look closely at menus in restaurants to determine if the meals are healthful or unhealthful.

 

CLOSURE:

Each group will share the menu that they have created with the class.
